Alphabetic Glossary

Agglomerate
is a group of particles or aggregates held together by relatively weak forces. The resulting external surface area is similar to the sum of each of the surfaces

Aggregate
is a group of particles strongly bounded. The resulting external surface area is smaller than the sum of each of the surfaces.

Engineered nanoparticle
are manufactured to hold specific properties for specific use.

Fullerene
are made up of pure carbon (more than 20 carbon atoms), in the form of hollow, sphere, ellipsoid, tube or plane. Spherichal fullerenes are often called bucky balls, and cylindrical called carbon nanotubes.

Nanomaterial
is a material with one or more dimensions in the nanoscale.

Nanomedicine

is the medical application of nanotechnology. Medical nanoparticles are man-made devices, employed in three areas of clinical relevanse; diagnostics including imaging, targeted drug delivery and controlled release, and regenerative medicine

Nanoparticle

refers to particles in the nanoscale in one, two or three dimensions, which may hold properties that differ significantly from those seen in the bulk scale.

Nanotechnology
refers to research and technology at the atomic, molecular and macromolecular scale, leading to the controlled creation and use of structures, devices, and systems on the nanoscale. The unique aspect of this technology is the vastly increased surface area to volume ratio, and the nanoparticles may hold properties different from bulk material, like quantum mechanic effects.

Nanoscale
is defined to be the range within 1-100 nm.

Quantum Dots
are fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals in the nanoscale in all three dimensions, whose properties is are betweene those of bulk semiconductors and diskrete molekyles. Due to their small size they can emit light with a specific wavelength that is limited by quantum confinement and determined by particle size and composition. Quantum dots are mainly used in medical imaging for localization of specific cells.
